Artist Statement
Belinda Stanton completed her Bachelor of Creative Art (hons) degree at the University of Southern Queensland in 2023. Prior to these studies, she was a graphic designer, illustrator, and potter. Her current work focuses on the process of translating personal thoughts into tangible, external spaces, communicating a visual narrative for others to perceive and experience.
Her interest in the transference of visual information from mind to canvas stems from her fascination with the human condition. In particular, how our minds work, how we translate and communicate thoughts visually, and how these tangible images become a physical record of our contemporary experiences. Belinda has recently begun looking at the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how this new technology could be used as a camera obscura that provides us with a distorted view of reality. She is examining the way in which image generation AI uses user prompts, publicly available images, and labelling systems to create work that reflects popular culture and contemporary societal biases and norms. She believes that by incorporating new technologies in her art processes such as AI and 3D printing, she can tap into the zeitgeist of the early 21st century. Belinda also sees a correlation between the somewhat mystical decision-making processes of AI image generators and the mysterious workings of the human inner mind.
Belinda’s ceramic work explores a more stylized and playful version of human emotion. Wherein she creates comical and cartoonish anamorphic characters that highlight the more humorous parts of everyday life.
Belinda’s ceramic and 2D work has been sold nationally and internationally. Her ceramic work can be seen and purchased at www.belinism.com
