Artist Statement

Belinda Stanton is a visual artist and researcher based in Queensland, Australia. She completed her Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) at the University of Southern Queensland in 2023 and is currently undertaking a PhD that explores the intersection of contemporary art, authorship, and generative artificial intelligence.

Prior to her academic studies, Belinda worked professionally as a graphic designer, illustrator, and potter. Her current artistic practice is driven by a desire to transform inner thought into visible form. She is particularly interested in how we communicate through imagery, how abstract ideas are given form, and how these expressions serve as a record of contemporary human experience.

Belinda’s research investigates the potential of emerging technologies—such as AI and 3D printing. She views AI as a kind of digital camera obscura: a tool that reflects, refracts, and distorts collective cultural narratives. Her work critiques the mechanisms of AI image generation, unpacking the ways these systems are shaped by user prompts, data bias, and inherited visual languages. At the same time, she draws parallels between AI's seemingly enigmatic logic or little black box and the subconscious processes of the human mind.
